These are “my” Southerners. The band is the Dirty Mallards. The place is Richmond, VA, before an Old Crow Medicine Show show. The date is July, 2010. The temperature? 103. The beverages of choice? Moonshine out of the mason jar and melted ice out of the cooler.
The Mallards played in my living room this New Year’s. I was very honored even though it was less of favor and more of a reaction to dire threats of Yankee-wrath.

In our continuing series of creeping on people with whom I work — hey look what Meredith Bragg of Reason.tv/two desks away from mine does in his non-Reason.tv time!
Why is everyone I work with so good at stuff?
(I think extra musical bonus is because Meredith lived in Harrisonburg, VA. IE THE LAND WHERE KETCH SECOR AND CRITTER FUQUA MET.)
I’m weirdly prominent in this video, too. Which is awkward. But it’s not what I wanted to discus. What I wanted to discus was Ketch Secor’s little dance at about 1:57. How many times have I rewound that while watching? I am not going to talk about that.
On this trip the gentlemen were scorning the ladies for their Ketch fawning. But we’re only human ladies. It’s necessary.

My hat plays way too prominent a part in this video. The dude’s other ones from the show are actually worse. Adventure hat is like that, though. That’s why it decided by its own accord to stay in S.T.’s Old Crow Wagon (actually used to belong to the band) instead of coming home with me to DC
Also this song is amazing. Sometimes I try to flat-foot to it, terribly.
This was the miracle show, by the way. No ticket, like room for 50 people, yet a gentleman in line had an extra one.

Sometimes I think about how I grew up in the era of oh my God, don’t put your photo on your geocities page or a stranger will molest you. And then I think about how I just slept on on the window seat of a hotel rented by 38-year-old Southerners I met on that internet, I take a swig of their moonshine and think damn, life is excellent when you love a band this much.

This is why I fucking love the South, ya hillbilly haters. My photos look cool all put together, too.
